What are Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth and are used to change their color, shape, size, or length.
What are Veneers Used to Fix?
- Teeth that are discolored or stained — either because of root canal treatment; stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth
- Teeth that are worn down or short
- Teeth that are chipped or broken
- Teeth that are slightly misaligned (if teeth are too crooked they will need orthodontic treatment)
- Veneers don’t require the extensive shaping or shaving the way that crowns do and they’re a better aesthetic alternative
- Closing gaps between teeth
What’s the Procedure for Getting a Dental Veneer?
Getting a dental veneer usually requires three appointments – a consultation, a second appointment to take impressions and third to apply the veneers. Several teeth can be done at once in this process.
Advantages of Veneers:
- Veneers tend to make people look younger and healthier
- They look natural – people won’t be able to tell you’ve had them done
- Porcelain veneers are stain resistant
- The can be made to make teeth look whiter
- Veneers don’t require the extensive shaping or shaving the way that crowns do and they’re a better aesthetic alternative.
Who is a Good Candidate for Veneers?
- Someone with healthy teeth and gums. We can help you solve any oral health issues first and then proceed with veneers after.
- People with generally straight teeth. Veneers can correct minor misalignment but very crooked teeth will require some sort of orthodontics.
- Individuals who clench and grind their teeth are NOT good candidates for porcelain veneers, as these activities can cause the veneers to crack or chip.
- In general, veneers will work for almost anyone that wants to improve their smile.
Do Dental Veneers Require Special Care?
Dental veneers do not require any special care. Continue to follow good oral hygiene practices, including daily brushing and flossing.
